How to Get the Most from your First Nutritionist Appointment

Your first nutrition coaching session is the start of your wellness evolution. This is an exciting time, and I want you to get the most out of each session! This starts with your first session, called a Discovery Meeting.

At Nutriologic, we call your first session a Discovery Meeting because it is designed to discover your needs, goals, and challenges. Every single Discovery Meeting is different, because it is entirely customized to you! If you are enrolling in a coaching program as a caregiver, we’ll focus on the needs of the person you’re caring for, but we’ll also talk about how to support you as you care for your loved one.

Think of this first session more as a conversation than an interview. Though I’ll have questions for you, I want to hear about your needs, habits, and daily life in your own words. We’ll talk about your health history and your food preferences, as well. As always, everything you share with me is completely confidential.

In this video, I explain more about the process and share questions a great nutritionist will ask you in the very first meeting.

The basis for this meeting is your intake form, which is provided to you when you sign up for a Discovery Meeting. I encourage you to fill out the form in as much detail as possible, since everything you share with me helps paint a picture of your health status and daily life. Based on the form and our Discovery Meeting, I can provide advice that is relevant to your needs and accessible to your lifestyle.

After this meeting, I will create for you a customized NutriPlate that shows you how to build a plate with the optimal foods to help you reach your goals. I’ll also provide ten customized recipes that will make the NutriPlate come to life. You’ll receive a customized sample grocery list, plus access to our membership portal and the private Nutriologic Facebook group. And that’s just from our first meeting!

One of the questions I get most often is what makes a nutritionist different from a dietitian. Both roles help people thrive through better nutrition, but a dietitian is a special distinction for someone who has passed an exam administered by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Think of it this way: Every dietitian is a nutritionist, but not every nutritionist is a dietitian.

Nutritionists help people identify their health needs and reach their nutrition goals through science-based recommendations and expertise. I am a nutritionist, and also a certified health coach. My health coach certification means that I am trained and experienced in helping people optimize their overall health. I am currently studying at Alabama A&M University to become a dietitian.
